HAND ANALYSIS — Hero vs Incógnito 1
Spot: SRP — SB vs BB | Position: OOP | Pot: 122.45 BB
1. VILLAIN READ
The villain is an extreme recreational profile (VPIP 80, PFR 0 over 121 hands). This is a passive fish (a calling station) who practically never raises preflop and defends his big blind against the SB 100% of the time (FOLD BB VS SB = 0).
As for the range you assigned him (59.6%), it is far too narrow for a player with VPIP 80. An opponent who calls 100% in BB vs SB and has a global VPIP of 80 plays almost any two cards. We have to widen his perceived range to practically 100% of hands (1,326 combos), including all the offsuit rubbish your declared range left out. This matters: he can turn up with combinations like 84o or 43o that complete straights on this board and that a regular would never hold.
2. PREFLOP ANALYSIS
Hero opens to 3 BB from the SB with K♥ 5♥. The open is correct by range and the sizing is standard. That said, as the theory for playing against fish sets out, against an inelastic "whale" (VPIP 80) we can exploit how much he calls by pushing the sizing to 4 BB or even more, to take immediate value with a hand that has equity.
The villain calls in the BB, which is his default action. His range here is limitless.
3. FLOP ANALYSIS K♣6♥5♦
Board [K♣ 6♥ 5♦]. Texture: connected and rainbow. Hero reaches the flop with two pair (K and 5).
It is an excellent board for Hero. We hold a very strong hand (top two) on a texture where the villain has plenty of worse Kx, 6x, 5x and straight draws. We bet 4.2 BB (70% of the pot). The sizing is right to take value from a range that wide; against this profile you could go bigger still (80-90% pot), since he is not folding any pair or any draw. The villain calls.
4. TURN ANALYSIS K♣6♥5♦7♣
The 7♣ falls. The board is now [K♣ 6♥ 5♦ 7♣]. Hero still holds two pair (K and 5), but the texture has turned very dangerous.
That 7♣ is a full-blown scary card. According to the board possibilities, straights come in with 98 (to the 9), 84 (to the 8) and 43 (to the 7). In a normal SRP against a regular we would not fear 84 or 43 that much, but against a VPIP 80 those hands are 100% in his range.
Hero bets 10.1 BB (70.1% of the pot). It is a value bet, but we have to be ready for what the opponent does next. The villain raises us to 20.2 BB (a min-raise). As the theory for playing against fish sets out, when a passive profile (PFR 0, low RAISE F CBET) decides to raise, his range is usually weighted heavily towards real value or the nuts. A turn min-raise is a classic strength "tell". Even so, on price (we need 18.4% pot odds) and holding two pair that can improve to a full house on the river, the call is compulsory, but with a great deal of caution.
5. RIVER ANALYSIS K♣6♥5♦7♣A♥
The A♥ falls. Final board: [K♣ 6♥ 5♦ 7♣ A♥]. Hero holds two pair (K and 5).
The A♥ is another bad card. We now lose to any Ax that floated the flop (very common in this profile) and to any better two pair such as AK, A7, A6 or A5.
Hero checks and the villain jams 70.8 BB (129.2% of the pot). Here we apply discipline: a passive fish with BET RIVER 19 who has barely shown any aggression all hand does not invent a 1.3x pot bluff on the river with air. His line (Call Flop / Raise Turn / Overbet AI River) represents enormous strength. Going by the list of hands that beat us, Incógnito 1 holds every combo of 98, 84 and 43 in his range, on top of every set and the new two pairs with the ace. We are at the bottom of our value range against massive aggression.
6. CONCLUSION
✓ What you did well
- The preflop open and the strong flop cbet to take value from the fish.
- The river fold. Folding two pair hurts, but it is an excellent disciplined fold against an opponent who does not bluff in these sequences.
✗ Mistakes
- The preflop sizing could be more ambitious (4 BB) against a VPIP 80.
- The turn sizing: once the straight comes in and the board gets this coordinated, our two pair of K and 5 loses a lot of relative strength. Betting 70% pot commits us too far against a raise. A check-call, or a smaller bet to keep the pot under control, would have been an alternative, although bet-fold (or bet-call on odds and fold the river) is acceptable.
Study recommendation
- Spotting capped ranges, and sizings that show respect, against recreational players.
- Reading relative hand strength on coordinated boards.
